The Challenge

People living with dementia often experience loneliness and social isolation, especially when caregivers are unavailable or when they live alone for portions of the day. Care staff have a lot on their plates, and there aren't always enough hours in the day for the kind of long, unhurried conversation that residents need. General-purpose AI assistants aren't designed for this population. They correct factual errors, ask memory-dependent questions, and give terse responses that don't sustain a real conversation.

A Friendly Voice, Anytime

The Memory Care Companion is a phone line that people in memory care can call to talk with Emma, an AI companion. Emma is warm, patient, and unhurried. She follows the caller's lead, draws out long-term memories, handles repetition gently, and goes with the flow.

Designed for Memory Care

  • Goes with the flow. If a caller says something inaccurate, Emma goes along with it.
  • Avoids recent-memory questions. Asks about childhood, family, and other long-term memories rather than yesterday or last week.

No App to Download

The caller dials a phone number and has a conversation with Emma. Any phone works: landline, flip phone, or smartphone. No internet connection or smartphone required.

Safe by Design

Emma avoids providing medical advice, crisis counseling, or specific information like phone numbers or addresses. If a caller needs help, Emma gently suggests contacting a caregiver or family member. If asked who she is, Emma identifies herself as an AI companion. Each call is independent, and no history or personal data is stored between calls.
